I was wrong when I speculated about how the interstices between the stones are filled. I know that several of you knew I was wrong, too, and did not say a word. That is tact.
The interstices between the stones are actually painstakingly filled in with mortar, a mixture and finely sifted sand and a cement-like substance. Perhaps it is just. . .ah. . .cement.
